Later that evening, Officer Daniel Cole and Detective James Rowe followed the clues from her drawing down a dirt road outside town. They found it — a small blue house with a broken fence, standing silent in the afternoon light.
Inside, the air was still. The kitchen counter held empty formula cans and bottles neatly washed and lined up to dry. On the fridge, a handwritten feeding chart: measurements, times, and check marks made by a child’s hand.
In the bedroom, they found a woman — Anna Maren, 28 years old — unconscious but alive.
Near her bed were damp towels, tiny spoons, and half-filled glasses of water.
“She tried to keep her family alive,” Rowe said quietly.
